Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (113g) Unsalted butter at room temperature (softened)
  • 2/3 cup (135g) Granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp of Orange zest (only the orange peel, not the white pith)
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 2 Tbsp (30g) Freshly squeezed orange juice
  • Orange food coloring gel (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp of Baking soda
  • A pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar for coating

Instructions

  1. Combine the butter, sugar, and orange zest in a large bowl. Stir with a spatula until soft and creamy.
  2. Add the egg, orange juice, and food coloring (optional). Stir to combine. The mixture will look curdled, but it will be smooth again after adding the flour.
  3. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt over the mixture. Gently stir with a spatula until just combined and smooth. Don’t overmix the flour.
  4. Refrigerate the dough for about 1 or 2 hours or until firm enough to roll into balls.
  5. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) for about 5 minutes before baking the cookies.
  7. After chilling, portion the dough using a one-tablespoon cookie scoop. Roll it using the palms of your hands, and then roll it in powdered sugar to coat.
  8. Place the balls in the prepared pan, leaving a space between them.
  9. Bake for about 12 minutes or until lightly brown at the bottom.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool for about 5 minutes, and transfer them to a cooling rack.
  11. You can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
